Everyone will agree that 2020 was a challenging year especially as we were thrust into the heat of the COVID-19 pandemic in the first quarter of the year. Dominicans here and abroad can attest to being glued to their radios, televisions or cellular phones as they awaited the usual voice of greeting, “Good evening everyone and welcome to the Press briefing of the Ministry of Health”. At a time when we all needed professionalism to not add to our agitation, there emerged a true professional:
Ms.Sheena Harry, Communications Specialist at The Ministry of Health, Wellness and New Health Investment. Ms. Harry had the charge of disseminating information to the public as well as chairing the all important press briefings of the Ministry and that she did quite competently. The fact that she is probably the one person to not be criticized during the live broadcast of the Ministry is testament to her level of competence and the satisfaction of the Dominican citizenry with her performance. Harry summarized each speaker’s main points to emphasize the importance of the information.
Sheena Harry also writes, edits and records numerous Public Service Announcements(PSA’s) to educate the public in various health issues. Her strong, steady voice and well articulated words can hardly be mistaken. Behind the scenes, Harry has the responsibility to direct persons especially media personnel to the correct expert within the Ministry to respond to queries.
Harry who was secretly asked for some information about herself said, “Even if I’m in front of the camera I’m not much for the spotlight” and on another occasion said, “Alas despite what people might think I really just don’t like the spotlight you know”. (Talk about humility)
