A 2.34 million dollar Emergency Centre in Layou was officially handed over on Tuesday 23, June. The centre which was delayed due to design changes as a result of Hurricane Maria is set to serve as an emergency shelter and resource center.
According to Dr. Adis King, parliamentary representative for the St Joseph Constituency, the centre will serve the needs of persons especially the youth. She said that several skill training programmes in key areas are being developed for the young people of the area.
She urged her constituents to show gratitude for the centre.
“To my constituents, you have been chosen to be the beneficiaries of this important structure, please show your appreciation and gratitude by taking care of it.”
The Centre features 115 cots for sleeping, an industrial kitchen, a small laundry mart, an administrative office, storage rooms and a medical station.The centre is also climate resilient as it has been wired for an electrical standby generator and will have a solar power PV and a water storage tank with water harvesting from the roof and a pumping system which will supply water in the event of water lock-off.
