Principal of Dominica Community High School and featured speaker at the recently held Calypso Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, Mrs. Celia Nicholas called for the artform of calypso to be used as a means of effecting change in behaviors.
She said, “No artform, and I repeat, no artform should be used to denigrate individuals but to convict them causing them to correct the error of their ways. The accused could be put on guard because no one is immune to the exposure of evil ways”.
She cited former Calypso Monarch, Fr Brancker John, one of the inductees, as an example of this and said that he uses his lyrics to evoke self examination.
Nicholas also highlighted the need to keep the artform alive and commended the organizers of the Hall of Fame for their initiative.
The Calypso Hall of Fame induction ceremony was held on February 14 at the Fort Young Hotel and saw the induction of Valantine ‘Young Bull’ Cuffy, Andrew ‘Scrunter’ Bazil, Julian ‘Superior Pickey’ Lockhart, Fr. Brancker ‘De Brakes’ John and prolific writer and MC, Patrick John.
The Calypso ‘Kaiso’ Hall of Fame is in collaboration with the University of the West Indies and inducts worthy contributors to the artform every four years. The 2020 induction ceremony is the fourth of its kind.
