St Lucia enjoys a perfect day at the office, mixed results for St Vincent and Dominica ends the rough day with crushing win in girls Basketball as the 2019 Winlott CBN Windward Islands School Games continued at 3 venues in Dominica on Wednesday.
The activities opened up at Benjamin’s Park with Netball, where St Lucia withheld a late 4 quarter rally from Dominica to win 33-25. Dominica went on a 10-2 run in the 4th but it was not enough. Celina Langlais led the scoring for Dominica with 22 from 30 attempts, and Kyla Winston 3 from 10, while Dasha Eugene converted on 15 from 28 and Megan Nestor 18 from 33 for St Lucia. In the other Netball match, St Vincent got the better of Grenada 35-29. Christiana Christopher made 19 from 29 for St Vincent, while for Grenada Carin Alexander scored 19 goals from 27 attempts.
The action moved to the Windsor Park sports stadium in the capital city in the afternoon for football, Grenada withheld a late fightback from St Vincent to pick up a 2-1 victory. Grenada found the back of the net early with Joshua Isaac getting a brace scoring in the 10th and 13th minute, however, Grenada picked up a red card when their goalkeeper handled a back pass and played the entire second half with 10 men.
Garret Leigerwood got a goal in the 73rd minute for St Vincent, but the Grenadians held on for the 2-1 win. In the Second encounter, Dillon Fannis hit a late free kick in the 88th minute of play to give St Lucia a 1-nil win over Dominica. Dominica squandered a number of chances on goal, and St Lucia made them pay in the dying stages of the match. Finally, the events concluded with girls basketball, at the St Joseph Hard Courts.
St Lucia edged out Grenada in front a massive crowd winning 41-37. Ma George led the way with 13 points and 7 rebounds, Megan Nestor had 8 points and 19 rebounds. While for Grenada Chantal Bartholomew was the only player in double figures scoring 22 points, Carlene Alexander had 4 points and 20 rebounds including 11 offensive rebounds. In the final match of the evening, Dominica put on a basketball clinic, as they ran through St Vincent.
Dominica secured a 65 point win, in what will go down as one of the largest margins of victory in the competition. Unique Powell scored 20, Dezra Clarke 13 as Dominica won 75-10.
St Vincent was held scoreless in the second half as Dominica turned on a full-court press. Angelika John scored 4 points for St Vincent.
The Interschools tournament will continue on Thursday with Athletics at the Windsor Park Sports Stadium in the morning, to be followed by Basketball in the evening at
Grenada will play St Vincent in the opening game at 7 pm, to be followed by Dominica and St Lucia at 8:30 pm.
