Attorney General says that there are obstacles in the way of electoral reform in Dominica

The panel discussion organized by the electoral commission, the University of the West Indies and the Dominica State college, held Wednesday evening achieved its purpose of informing the public on salient issues in the electoral process and electoral reform.

In his presentation, the Attorney General pointed out that reform is “desirable and should be effected” and that to the best of his knowledge all concerned parties are in favor or electoral reform. Further, he pointed out that the laws which govern our electoral system predates our independence and therefore there is a need for reform. He pointed to different obstacles in the way of reform. In his presentation, Linton alluded to the fact that there are serious concerns with the proposed amendments to the Acts. He thinks that the proposed amendments would further the agenda of the ruling party and not be in the best interest of the country.

The panelists were Hon. Francine Baron, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Attorney General Levi Peter, leader of the opposition, Hon. Lennox Linton, senator Felix Thomas and chairman of the Electoral Commission, Mr. Gerard Burton. The discussion was moderated by Ms.Trudy Christian, director of student affairs at the Dominica State College.
