Dominica has a new Cuban Ambassador. His Excellency Ulises Arranas Fernandez presented his credential to Dominica’s President, His Excellency Charles Angelo Savarin at a formal reception on Friday December 28, 2018 in Roseau.
The new ambassador pledged continued commitment from the government and people of Cuba as he carries out the mantle to solidify ongoing diplomatic arrangement which currently exists between Havana and Roseau.
In receiving the new Cuban diplomat, President Savarin indicated Dominica’s willingness to maintain what he termed as “A very friendly and Fruitful” relationship since May 1996. Like the Cuba diplomat, President Savarin expressed his continued optimism in the benefits of his country’s bilateral relations with Cuba.
Cuba and Dominica share diplomatic ties through the “United Nations System, Alba, Petrocaribe and other regional and international ogarnizations.” That is according to His Excellency, Charles Savarin. Dominica and Cuba have cooperated, especially in the area of health education, with the training of several health/medical professional over the years.
His Excellency Savarin expressed that Cuba’s medical program greatly assists Dominica’s health services through the procurement of Cuban health specialists who perform “Daily services at the Portsmouth Marigot and Roseau hospitals.”
The friendship between Dominica and Cuba goes beyond the signing of formalized diplomatic relations, when the first tranche of Dominican students departed following Hurricane David in 1979. Former Prime Minister, deceased Roosevelt Douglas who operated as a human rights activist at that time, is the pioneer of this first initiative.
