Business Training Center Launches Junior Climate Resilience Champions ProgramΒ With Support From CCRIF SPC

Business Training Center (BTC) is pleased to announce the launch of the Junior Climate Resilience Champions Program, a summer initiative designed to build climate awareness, disaster preparedness, and environmental stewardship among young Dominicans. The program is funded through a US$22,000 grant from CCRIF SPC under its Small Grants Programme.

The program targets approximately 125 children aged 5 to 15 from communities across Dominica. Participation is completely free of charge. Activities will run from July through August 2026. Two age-differentiated cohorts will participate in hands-on workshops spanning five modules: Disaster Risk Management Awareness, Engineering for Climate Resilience, Climate Change Awareness Through Art, Community Environmental Action, and Capacity Building.

Younger participants aged 5 to 9 will engage in interactive storytelling, play-based learning, and basic hazard recognition. The older cohort, aged 10 to 15, will tackle problem-solving exercises, introductory risk analysis, applied climate science, and peer-to-peer learning. All participants will take part in community environmental projects including watershed clean-ups, tree planting, community garden development, and educational visits to agricultural farms. The program also includes field visits to the Hurricane Maria memorial in Pointe Michel, and disaster-affected sites in the Kalinago Territory, giving children a firsthand understanding of why preparedness saves lives.

β€œThis program is about planting seeds of resilience in the next generation,” said Lucia Stedman, Managing Director of BTC. β€œAs hurricane season 2026 officially begins, Dominica knows firsthand the devastating effects of climate-related disasters. By equipping our young people with practical knowledge and skills, we are building communities that are better prepared, more aware, and actively engaged in protecting our environment.”

CCRIF (Caribbean and Central America Parametric Facility and Development Insurer), is the world’s first multi-country, multi-peril risk pool based on parametric insurance. It provides coverage for tropical cyclones, excess rainfall, river flooding, earthquakes, and for the electric and water utilities and fisheries sectors to Caribbean and Central American countries.

BTC, which has served the Commonwealth of Dominica for nearly 30 years, will draw on its extensive experience in youth development and community-based programming to deliver the initiative. The program also aims to support wider household and community knowledge transfer through the Climate Champions model, where participating children share what they learn with their families and neighbors.

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy.
