UN Secretary-General Thanks Cindy McCain for Service as WFP Chief, Welcomes Acting Executive Director
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has expressed deep appreciation to Cindy McCain as she steps down from her role as Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP).
In a statement issued through his spokesperson, the Secretary-General praised McCain’s leadership, noting that under her tenure the organization became leaner, faster, and more agile in responding to global humanitarian crises. He highlighted her efforts to strengthen accountability, promote innovation, advance humanitarian diplomacy, and sustain life-saving operations that reached nearly 100 million people annually.
The Secretary-General also commended McCain for helping to secure new sources of funding, expanding strategic partnerships, and prioritizing the safety and wellbeing of both WFP staff and beneficiaries around the world.
He thanked her for her steadfast commitment to combating global hunger and malnutrition and wished her success in her future endeavors.
The Secretary-General also welcomed Carl Skau as Acting Executive Director of WFP. Skau has served as the agency’s Deputy Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer since May 2023.
His appointment comes at a critical time, with more than 360 million people worldwide facing acute food insecurity.
The United Nations announced that the process to identify a new Executive Director for WFP will begin shortly. The selection process will be conducted jointly by the Secretary-General and the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
