Food and Agriculture Organization Sub-Regional Coordinator for the Caribbean, Renata Clarke, has praised the impact of Dominica’s agricultural drone team, describing it as one of the major successes under the FAO Country Programming Framework.
The drone team, made up of officers from the Ministry of Agriculture, received specialized training from FAO to gather and analyze data relating to farms, land use, production systems, and vulnerable areas across the island.
The initiative forms part of the 2022–2026 Country Programming Framework signed in March 2023 between FAO and the Government of Dominica through the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, Blue and Green Economy.
The agreement outlines key priorities and expected outcomes aimed at strengthening the agricultural sector and supporting the Ministry’s goal of contributing at least EC$700 million to Dominica’s GDP by 2030.
Dr. Clarke, who is currently in Dominica to assist with preparations for the next five-year framework, said the drone team has proven especially valuable in disaster response efforts and in monitoring the island’s terrain.
