| The Caribbean Tourism Organization’s Sustainable Tourism Conference wrapped up on a high note last week in San Pedro on Ambergris Caye, bringing together tourism leaders from across the region and beyond under the theme “Tourism in Full Color: Integrating Blue, Green, Orange and Beyond Economies into Sustainable Planning and Development.” Hosted by the Belize Tourism Board and the Ministry of Tourism, Youth, Sports and Diaspora Relations, the conference provided a dynamic platform for dialogue, innovation and collaboration. Ministers, directors of tourism, policymakers, private sector representatives, NGO leaders, sustainability experts and students took part in forward-looking discussions on climate resilience, cultural preservation, community empowerment and financing for sustainable growth. From high-level ministerial panels to immersive field visits across Belize’s natural and cultural sites, the event reinforced a central message: the Caribbean possesses both the vision and the practical tools to lead the world in sustainable tourism development. Participants spotlighted actionable strategies across the blue, green, orange, yellow, purple, silver and black economies, with strong emphasis on implementation, partnerships and measurable results. More than 350 delegates from about 30 countries attended STC 2026, held at the Grand Caribe and Sunset Caribe resorts. The rich discussions and outcomes strengthened the region’s commitment to building a more resilient, inclusive and future-ready tourism sector. Antigua PM Gaston Browne cruises to fourth term with 15-seat majority Prime Minister Gaston Browne led the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP) to a historic fourth consecutive term in office after his party won a snap general election held Thursday.The ABLP captured 15 of the 17 seats in the House of Representatives in a landslide victory. “It will serve to strengthen my resolve to better serve you,” the prime minister said. “I will do all in my power to continue to work unrelentingly to advance the living standards of the people of Antigua and Barbuda.” Jamale Pringle, leader of the United Progressive Party, retained his seat and was the party’s only successful candidate. The initiative aims to raise awareness across countries and territories in the Region of the Americas about the link between mosquitoes and the diseases they transmit, including Dengue Fever, Chikungunya and Zika Virus. It also encourages communities to take action to prevent mosquito breeding and reduce the spread of illness.There are three ways to combat the effects of the mosquito. Prevent Mosquito Breeding Eliminating standing water is the most effective way to reduce mosquito populations. Keep water drums, barrels and tanks tightly covered or sealed. Cut or shred unused tires to prevent water from collecting, or drill holes to allow drainage if they are repurposed. Turn over, cover or discard containers that can collect water. Once a week, empty and scrub vases and plant saucers. Clean guttering of leaves and debris to ensure water flows freely. Empty, clean and store kiddie pools when not in use, and maintain larger pools regularly. Avoid Mosquito Bites Reduce your risk of bites by covering exposed skin with long-sleeved clothing, trousers and hats. Use insect repellents containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Sleep under mosquito nets where necessary, and install or repair screens on doors and windows. Regularly empty, clean, cover or discard any items that may hold water around your home. Take Action Seek medical advice if you experience symptoms such as fever, rash, headache, joint pain, red eyes or muscle aches. Avoid travelling when ill to help prevent the spread of mosquito-borne diseases. Community participation remains essential in reducing mosquito breeding sites and protecting public health. ![]() |
