The Kalinago Council and Seacology Partner to protect the Forest and Enhance the L’escalier Tete Chien.

Kalinago Territory, Dominica – The Kalinago Council is pleased to announce that it has received a generous grant from Seacology, an international nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting island environments and cultures. This funding will be used to enhance and develop the Lescalier Tête Chien site — one of the Kalinago Territory’s most unique and culturally significant natural landmarks.

The project will include the development of a welcoming reception area, installation of interpretative signage, creation of guided tour experiences, and tree planting initiatives. In return, the Kalinago Council has committed to the long-term conservation of 65 acres of pristine coastal forest, ensuring the preservation of biodiversity and traditional heritage for future generations.

This partnership follows a recent visit from Seacology’s Executive Director, Duane Silverstein, and some members of the Seacology team, who met with the Kalinago Council to discuss opportunities for sustainable development and cultural preservation.

Chief Anette Thomas-Sanford expressed deep appreciation for the support:

“This project represents a meaningful step towards protecting our natural heritage while creating sustainable economic opportunities for the Kalinago people especially the People of Sineku. We thank Seacology for believing in our vision and partnering with the Kalinago Council to safeguard both our land and our culture.”

Lescalier Tête Chien — named after a legendary serpent in Kalinago folklore — is a geological and cultural treasure that draws visitors from across Dominica and beyond. Through this project, the Kalinago Council aims to enhance the visitor experience while maintaining the site’s ecological integrity and spiritual significance.

Seacology’s mission aligns closely with the Kalinago Council’s commitment to sustainable development and environmental stewardship. The grant ensures that the Lescalier Tête Chien project will not only protect vital coastal forest but also strengthen community-led tourism and conservation efforts.

It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using ‘Content here, content here’, making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for ‘lorem ipsum’ will uncover many web sites still in their infancy.
