Theme: “Men, Your Prostate Health Matters”
The Dominica Cancer Society takes its message of “early detection, saves lives” to men during the month of September. This is as the society in collaboration with its Men Support Group observes Prostate Cancer Awareness Month with the theme “ Men Your Prostate Health Matters” The theme this year suggests, that while there should be concern about prostate cancer, as each year many of our men die of the condition but that other conditions impact prostate health and the prostate is an essential part of the male reproductive organ.
Prostate Cancer Awareness Month is is therefore used as an opportunity to highlight the importance of risk factors, recognizing symptoms and encouraging men to get regular screening for prostate cancer and other prostate conditions for early detection and better treatment outcomes.
A Radio Talk by the Hon. Minister for Health and Social Services on Monday September 1st will officially open the Month. Other activities planned include: free Prostate Cancer screening and community fora in a number of health districts, radio discussions, work place sessions and sessions with sports organizations. As in previous years, there is expected to be reduction on Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) Tests as well as on certain prostate drugs at laboratories and pharmacies.
A main highlight to the month, will be a Benefit Concert “ Songs and Rhythms for Cancer Care under the distinguished patronage of the President of the Commonwealth of Dominica, Her Excellency Mrs Sylvanie Burton and Mr. Burton. The concert climaxes activities for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and takes place on Saturday September 27th at the Alliance Francaise. This Benefit Concert is an initiative of one of Dominica’s lead Jazz/Classical Guitarist, Tyson Johnson in collaboration with the Men Support Group of the Dominica Cancer Society. The Concert will feature the Johnson family as the main act along with other artistes of the like of Michele Henderson, Janae Jackson and Neal Grove .It will also be punctuated with some Steel Pan Music.
The Dominica Cancer Society is pleased to use music and other forms to empathize to men that is it is not just enough to know about Prostate Cancer but it is also important to act by checking your doctor and get screened.
